Practical upgrades that make daily living safer and more independent
This home accessibility project in Robina focused on improving overall safety and mobility by introducing practical modifications. The aim was to create a more independent and user-friendly environment while reducing the risk of trips, slips, and falls.

Scope of Works
The upgrades included:
- Installation of a stainless-steel modular handrail
- Installation of a horizontal 900mm grab rail (GR) in the shower
Challenges Encountered
Handrail:
- Limited Fixing Points: Securing the handrail into solid, stable material due to the age or construction of the steps/surface.
- Client Accessibility Needs: The handrail positioning had to be tailored to suit the client’s mobility needs, ensuring a safe and supportive grip along the full length of the steps.
Grab Rail:
- Structural Considerations: Ensuring the grab rail installations were securely fixed to existing surfaces without damaging tiled surfaces.
- Identifying Services: Ensuring fixings used to secure grab rail and hand-held shower do not damage any plumbing or electrical services.
- Wall Stud Positioning: Wall studs in the shower were not ideally located for the client’s preferred grab rail positioning.
Solutions Implemented
Handrail:
- Extra care was taken to locate suitable fixing points to ensure longevity. We selected stainless steel for durability and visual appeal in an outdoor setting
- The handrail was installed at the optimal height and angle in line with AS 1428.1 standards, ensuring consistent support up the full flight of steps.
- We also selected a 38mm diameter rail to provide a comfortable and secure grip, tailored specifically to the client’s mobility and safety requirements.
Grab rail:
- Reinforced fixings and high-quality stainless steel fittings were used to ensure all rails met both strength and durability requirements.
- We used a digital wall scanner to scan the area to locate plumbing and electrical services in wall
- Adaptable Grab Rail Fixings:
- Grab rails were secured directly into wall studs to maximise strength and safety.
- A modular grab rail system was used to ensure suitable fixings into framework
The Result
The completed works have greatly improved the home’s accessibility, allowing the client safer entry and a more independent living. The client now has a sense of greater safety and more confidence.
The handrail and grab rail have been a huge help. I feel much safer getting around now. Tom was great — friendly, professional, and really listened to what I needed. Big thanks!
